Chihiro, dix ans, a tout d’une petite fille grincheuse. Elle est sur le point de déménager dans une nouvelle maison avec ses parents. Dans la rue, la petite famille se tient devant un immense bâtiment rouge, au milieu duquel s’ouvre un long tunnel. De l’autre côté du passage, il y a une ville fantôme. Les parents découvrent de nombreux plats juteux dans un restaurant du désert et sautent rapidement sur eux. Ils sont ensuite transformés en porcs. Dans la panique, Chihiro s’est enfui et s’est progressivement dématérialisé. L’énigmatique Haku est chargée d’expliquer le fonctionnement de l’univers dans lequel elle vient d’entrer. Pour sauver ses parents, la jeune fille doit affronter la terrible sorcière Yubaba, qui a les traits d’une harpie méphistophélienne.
